Salbutamol (albuterol), more commonly known by the brand name Ventolin HFA, is a bronchodilator used to both treat and prevent wheezing and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing and opening up the airways in the lungs.
Ventolin HFA is most commonly used to treat asthma attacks, as well as other breathing problems and airway diseases.
Ventolin is taken using an inhaler - also known as a puffer, pump, or allergy spray. Inhale this medication by mouth according to instructions given by your doctor. Generally, doses are to be taken every 4-6 hours; however, dosages are determined for each individual's condition and response to the treatment plan. Shake well before use in order that you can see fine mist being emitted when tested afterward.
The side effects of your child taking Ventolin may include shakiness/unsteadiness/tremors, headaches and dizziness, mouth/throat irritation or dryness. In any case, doctors will only prescribe this medication with much caution and consideration. If any of these e side effects persist or worsen, please contact your doctor immediately.
Ventolin is typically stored at room temperature (never in the refrigerator). Keep this medication away from sources of extreme heat and cold. When not being used, always keep it in its original container which will protect it from light and moisture.
Ventolin is not suitable for everyone, and you should seek medical advice for your child if they experience:
Your child is allergic to salbutamol (albuterol)
Your child has heart disease
Your child has a thyroid disorder
Your child has a history of seizures
Your child has diabetes
Your child has low levels of potassium in their blood
Ventolin is not approved for use by children under the age of 4.
