FAQs
Minor injuries generally refer to anything from bruises, cuts, and scrapes to soft-tissue injuries such as a sprained ankle. Injuries are an unavoidable part of a healthy childhood – accidents come with kids running around and staying fit.
Common minor injuries include:
Falls, bumps and bruises
Cuts, skin tears, blisters and light burns
Animal/insect bites and stings
Sprained ankles, whiplash
Foreign bodies (splinters, sand in the eyes)
Symptoms for minor injuries tend to be easier to spot; these include:
Bleeding
Joint or tissue swelling
Inability to move a joint or muscle free of pain
Reddened/flushed skin
General soreness/pain
A large majority of minor injuries can be dealt with at home - getting rest, ice in the area and elevation are often effective ways of dealing with injuries. See a pediatrician for medical advice if your child's injury does not improve with these remedies within a few weeks.
Your child's pediatrician will be able to carry out examinations to determine the severity of an injury. In addition, your pediatrician can provide direction for treatment/medication to help with injury recovery. Along with the initial consultation, your pediatrician will be able to schedule follow-up appointments to further evaluate and care for your child's injury.
If necessary, your pediatrician may refer your child to a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists will be able to provide treatment and instructions for recovery, as well as perform follow-ups to gauge the recovery process.
Note - if your child is dealing with severe pain or has extreme symptoms, seek emergency medical attention. KixCare Pediatricians can address most questions about minor injuries, but if you believe your child's condition is serious, please don't hesitate to go to the hospital.
