FAQs
A fever is a natural defense mechanism our bodies naturally produce to fight off illness. Our temperatures rise above 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) and cause an increase in white blood cells. This helps remove bacteria and viruses from our system faster than they can reproduce.
Aside from high temperature levels, your child may exhibit the following signs:
Easily irritable and very fussy
Have trouble with swallowing
Lack of an appetite
Flushed skin
Headaches
A lowgrade fever (lower than 38.9 degrees celsius, or 102 degrees Farenheit) does not require special medical attention. Children with fevers do not need to take medication unless they feel uncomfortable. A few ways to ease symptoms include:
Making sure that your child drinks plenty of fluids - helps the body avoid dehydration
Wearing lightweight clothing throughout the day - allows body heat to escape and regulates temperature
Making sure your child gets plenty of rest - children with fevers should stay home from school/nursery until their temperatures return to normal levels for at least 24 hours
If your child has a fever of 39 degrees Celsius (102.2 degrees Farenheit) or more, see a pediatrician for medical advice. Your child's pediatrician will be able to carry out examinations to determine the cause of the fever. In addition, your pediatrician can provide direction for treatment/medication to help with your child's fever. Along with the initial consultation, your pediatrician may choose to schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your child's condition.
