FAQs
Benadryl is a medicine called diphenhydramine, which is an antihistamine that works as soon as you take it. It stops your body from producing histamines when having a reaction so you can feel better fast.
Benadryl can relieve symptoms of allergy, sneezing, and coughing. It is also very effective against hives, but the medication has many other uses as well including prevention from nausea and dizziness on a boat or plane for example.
Benadryl can be taken orally in tablet, capsule, or liquid form. Benadryl is also available in gel and cream forms if used for skin. In a case where Benadryl has been prescribed for your children follow the directions of your doctor to determine dosage amounts that are appropriate given their age and weight as per instructions on packaging labels. Benadryl kids is a common alternative recommended by doctors as well.
There are a few common but mild side effects that parents may notice after their children have taken Benadryl:
Sleepiness
Constipation/upset stomach
Temporarily blurred vision
Dry mouth/tongue
Watery eyes
Benadryl is a prescription drug that doctors typically prescribe after they have determined its benefits to be greater than the risks of side effects. More serious side effects can include an irregular heartbeat, seizures, and slowed memory along with other rarer conditions such as rashes or trouble breathing. If your child experiences these symptoms contact their doctor right away; in the rare case where there's an allergic reaction seek medical attention immediately.
As a parent, you want to make sure that your child is feeling better as quickly and safely as possible. If they are under the age of 6 years old, only use Benadryl if directed by their doctor because it's not approved for children ren who have yet reached this age in over-the-counter products. Your pediatrician will give them a recommended dosage based on their weight, age, symptoms, and other factors.
If your child is over the age of six years old they can take Benadryl but it's not recommended for kids who have coughs that are accompanied by a fever since this could be indicative of pneumonia or another serious illness.
The most common side effects with children under 12on how severe their symptoms might be but do keep an eye out for any side effects or interactions with other medications - especially those dealing with heart disease, kidney/liver diseases/glaucoma, or bladder obstruction!
