Children who have had a nagging cough daily for over four weeks may be dealing with a chronic cough. Occasional coughing is our body’s normal response to irritants in the lungs, but consistent coughing points towards a medical issue.
A chronic cough can often be a sign of other medical conditions – the following symptoms regularly accompany a chronic cough:
Runny/stuffy nose
Chest pain/soreness
Sore throat
Postnasal drip (feels like liquid is running down your throat)
Heavy breathing/feeling short of breath
If your child has just developed a cough, it's a good idea to try out home remedies such as honey and lemon water, or salt and water gargles. See a pediatrician for medical advice if your child's cough does not improve with these remedies within three to four weeks, or if the symptoms listed above occur along with the cough.
Your child's pediatrician will be able to carry out examinations to determine the cause of a chronic cough. In addition, your pediatrician can appropriately suggest various treatments/medications to help with chronic coughing and/or any other symptoms. Along with the initial consultation, your pediatrician will be able to schedule follow-up appointments to further evaluate your child's chronic cough. If your child is coughing up blood, it is a sign of a serious medical issue – arrange to see a pediatrician immediately.
